Integrated Community Center

A secure Enclosed Area for Physical Activity to Channel Youth Energy

We care deeply and learn continuously. Over the last 7 years, our in-depth community experience shows that we need to move beyond just learning inputs.

This year, we will be converting our Shakurpur Learning Center into a multipurpose Community Center- Jai Ho Kendra, that offers multiple services under one roof from childcare to learning support, and child and youth development.

What this center will offer:
• A full day crèche for younger children (upto 3 years of age) with a capacity of 60 children allowing mothers the freedom to attend training or go to work and older siblings to attend school.

• After school Daycare Services: A safe, supervised day care service for children 4-14 years of age who can come to center after school and stay up to 6 pm till their parents return.

Educational support: After-School and open education support (for children who cannot attend traditional schools due to multiple reasons): Fully resourced 10-12 classrooms with 15-20 teachers dedicated to helping children bridge their learning and language gap and providing them with flexible hours of learning (as part of Open Basic Education Program of National Institute of Open School). This is what GWER has already been doing with considerable success, our current space can cater to 500 to 600 children in two shifts.

A digital literacy center providing help with basic computer and digital literacy skill to students enrolled in its educational programs as well to other youth.

Sports and Wellbeing: A secure, enclosed area for physical activity to channel youth energy constructively.

Library & Computer Rooms: A supervised library with sitting capacity of at least 50 students open from 8 am till 10 pm for older students, adolescents and young adults. This will be well-stocked with reading materials that are absent in their homes, as well as computers for online learning.

“Urban Orientation” kiosk to help people access and navigate essential services such as school admissions, ID documentation (Aadhar), and formal healthcare.

Child and adolescent health: An equipped space for visiting doctors, health camps, and counseling for mental well-being. We will start with some basic health checkups for children and youth, and follow-up care as needed with services such as de-worming and eyeglasses which have been found to substantially enhance children’s ability to learn. Once this is established, we will add reproductive services for youth and women.

Nutrition support: for all the children in the center, we will offer the same nutritional supplement that we currently provide in our learning centers- we provide nutritionally dense biscuits and other dry food to children who have not been given a packed lunch from home. We will also explore the feasibility of offering cooked food at a subsidized cost.

Where are we in execution of our vision: The physical space in the community has been identified and preparation of detailed plans are underway. Partnerships with other NGOs working in specialized areas of running creches, sports center, libraries are being explored.
